Description

DC PV Y Branch Solar Connector – 1000V 30A, 1-to-2/3/4 Photovoltaic Panel Parallel Adapter

PV Y-branch connectors (also called T-branch or multi-branch connectors) allow multiple solar panels to be connected in parallel without a combiner box — combining the current from 2, 3, or 4 panels into a single cable run to the inverter or charge controller. The 1000V DC rating covers standard residential and commercial PV system voltages. The 30A current rating accommodates the combined short-circuit current (Isc) of multiple panels in parallel. MC4-compatible housing geometry ensures compatibility with standard MC4 solar cable assemblies.

  • Quantity: 1, 5, or 20 sets (select above)

Series vs Parallel PV Wiring — When to Use Y-Branch Connectors

  • Series wiring: Panels connected positive-to-negative. Voltage adds; current stays the same. Use for string inverters requiring high DC input voltage (300–600V). No Y-branch connectors needed — standard MC4 male-to-female connections.
  • Parallel wiring (Y-branch, this product): Panels connected positive-to-positive, negative-to-negative. Current adds; voltage stays the same. Use for: MPPT charge controllers with low voltage input, microinverters with individual panel connections, and mixed-orientation panel arrays where shading on one panel should not affect others. Y-branch connectors combine the positive outputs and negative outputs of multiple panels into single cable runs.
  • Series-parallel: Combination of both. Strings of series-connected panels are then paralleled using Y-branch connectors. Common in larger residential and commercial systems.

Current Rating — How to Verify Your System is Within Limits

The 30A rating applies to the combined current on the trunk cable (the single cable exiting the Y-branch). Calculate as follows:

  • Find the short-circuit current (Isc) on your panel datasheet
  • Multiply by the number of panels in parallel: Total Isc = Panel Isc × Number of panels
  • Apply a 1.25× safety factor per NEC 690.8: Design current = Total Isc × 1.25
  • Verify design current ≤ 30A (connector rating) and ≤ cable ampacity
  • Example: 3 panels × 10A Isc = 30A × 1.25 = 37.5A design current — exceeds 30A rating. Use a combiner box instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I connect panels with different wattages in parallel using Y-branch connectors?

Technically yes, but not recommended. Panels in parallel must have the same open-circuit voltage (Voc) to avoid reverse current flow from higher-voltage panels into lower-voltage panels. Panels with different wattages but the same Voc (common in same-model panels with different degradation levels) can be paralleled safely. Panels with different Voc values should not be paralleled — use separate strings or a combiner box with individual fusing per string.

Do I need bypass diodes or fuses with Y-branch connectors?

For systems with 2 or more panels in parallel, each string should be protected by a series fuse or circuit breaker rated slightly above the panel’s Isc. Without individual string fusing, a shaded or failed panel can become a current sink, drawing reverse current from the other panels through the Y-branch — potentially exceeding the panel’s reverse current rating and causing damage or fire. Most modern panels include bypass diodes within the junction box, but these protect against internal cell shading, not reverse current from parallel strings.

Are these MC4 compatible?

These connectors use MC4-compatible housing geometry and mate with standard MC4 male and female connectors. However, “MC4-compatible” does not mean “identical to genuine Staubli MC4.” For IEC 62548 and NEC 690 compliant installations requiring certified components, specify genuine Staubli MC4 or equivalent UL-listed connectors. For off-grid, DIY, and non-utility-interactive systems, MC4-compatible connectors provide equivalent performance.

What cable size should I use with PV Y-branch connectors?

Standard PV cable is 4mm² (12AWG) for most residential panel connections. The trunk cable (exiting the Y-branch) must be sized for the combined current of all parallel panels — if the combined current exceeds the ampacity of 4mm² cable (approximately 30A in free air), upsize to 6mm² (10AWG). Always use UV-resistant, double-insulated PV cable (TUV 2Pfg 1169 or UL 4703) — standard electrical cable is not rated for outdoor DC solar applications.

Typical Applications

  • Off-grid solar: Paralleling panels to increase current output to MPPT charge controllers
  • RV and marine solar: Combining multiple roof panels into a single cable run to the charge controller
  • Residential grid-tie: Series-parallel string configurations for string inverters
  • Portable solar: Combining foldable panel outputs for portable power stations
  • Agricultural: Remote irrigation pump solar systems with multiple panels
