NL4FC Speakon 4-Pin Audio Connector – Solder-Free Screw Terminal for Amplifier & Speaker Cabinets
NL4FC Speakon 4-Pin Audio Connector – Solder-Free Screw Terminal for Amplifier & Speaker Cabinets
The Neutrik NL4FC is the industry-standard 4-pole Speakon connector for professional audio speaker wiring. Speakon connectors replaced the 1/4” phone jack as the standard for high-power PA and studio monitor connections because of their locking mechanism (prevents accidental disconnection under load), fully insulated contacts (eliminates shock hazard when handling live cables), and superior current capacity. The NL4FC is the panel-mount chassis version — installed in amplifier output panels and speaker cabinet input cups — while the NL4FX is the cable-mount plug that mates with it.

NL2 vs NL4 vs NL8 — Speakon Pole Count Explained
- NL2 (2-pole): 1+ and 1- only. For single-channel (full-range) speaker connections. Simpler, lower cost. Cannot carry bi-amp signals.
- NL4 (4-pole, this product): 1+/1- and 2+/2-. The most common professional standard. Supports both single-channel (using 1+/1- only) and bi-amp (using both channel pairs simultaneously). NL4 connectors are backward compatible with NL2 cables — an NL2 cable plugged into an NL4 socket connects to the 1+/1- pair.
- NL8 (8-pole): Four independent channel pairs. Used for tri-amp systems, line arrays, and multi-way speaker systems requiring more than two amplifier channels per cabinet.
What Questions Does This Product Answer?
- "What is the difference between NL4FC and NL4FX?" — NL4FC is the chassis/panel mount connector (installed in the amplifier or speaker cabinet). NL4FX is the cable connector (attached to the speaker cable). They mate together: NL4FX cable plug → NL4FC panel socket.
- "Can I use a 2-pole Speakon cable with a 4-pole Speakon socket?" — Yes. An NL2 cable (2-pole) plugged into an NL4 socket connects to the 1+/1- pair. The 2+/2- pair remains unconnected. This is fully compatible for single-channel full-range speaker use.
- "How do I wire a Speakon connector for bi-amping?" — Connect the low-frequency amplifier output to 1+/1- and the high-frequency amplifier output to 2+/2-. The speaker crossover must be wired to receive both pairs separately. Verify the speaker cabinet’s internal wiring before connecting a bi-amp signal.
- "Why use Speakon instead of 1/4” jack for speakers?" — Three reasons: (1) Locking — Speakon cannot be accidentally kicked out; (2) Safety — contacts are fully recessed and insulated, eliminating shock hazard when handling live cables; (3) Current capacity — 40A vs approximately 5A for a 1/4” jack, critical for high-power amplifiers.
- "What wire gauge should I use for Speakon speaker cables?" — For runs up to 10m: 2.5mm² (13AWG) minimum. For runs 10–30m or high-power systems: 4mm² (11AWG) or 6mm² (10AWG). The NL4FC screw terminals accept up to 6mm² per contact.
Typical Applications
- PA systems: Amplifier output panels, powered speaker input cups, subwoofer connections
- Studio monitors: Active monitor speaker input connectors, studio amplifier outputs
- Stage & live sound: Front-of-house speaker stacks, monitor wedges, line array connections
- Install audio: Fixed installation amplifier racks, ceiling speaker distribution, conference room audio
- DIY speaker builds: Custom cabinet input cups, amplifier module output panels
Installation Notes
- Drill or punch a 24mm hole in the panel or cabinet
- Insert the connector from the front; secure with the locking nut from the rear (tighten to 1.5 Nm)
- Strip wire to 8–10mm; insert into the screw terminal and tighten (do not over-tighten — brass screw threads strip easily)
- Maintain correct polarity: 1+ = positive (red), 1- = negative (black) for single-channel use
- For bi-amp: label the 2+/2- terminals clearly to avoid connecting LF and HF amplifier outputs in reverse
