Why GM VVT Solenoid Connectors Fail
GM VVT solenoid connectors are mounted on the valve cover or cylinder head, in the highest-temperature zone of the engine bay. Thermal cycling from cold start to operating temperature (repeated daily) causes the connector housing to expand and contract, fatiguing the locking tab over time. On GM Ecotec (Z18XER, A18XER) and LS-family engines, oil vapour from the PCV system coats the VVT solenoid connector terminals, increasing contact resistance. A high-resistance connection on the PWM ground pin (Pin 2) causes the ECU to log P0010/P0011 — the VVT system cannot advance cam timing correctly, resulting in rough idle and reduced fuel economy.
Compatible Applications
- Chevrolet Cruze / Malibu / Equinox – Ecotec engine VVT solenoid
- Buick Excelle / Regal – VVT solenoid and ECT sensor
- Opel/Vauxhall Astra / Insignia – Z18XER, A18XER engine
- Cadillac ATS / CTS – LTG engine VVT solenoid connector
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: My GM has P0010 but the VVT solenoid tests OK — what’s wrong?
A: P0010 is a circuit fault — it means the ECU cannot control the VVT solenoid correctly, which can be caused by a corroded connector rather than a failed solenoid. Inspect the 2-pin connector for corrosion on Pin 2 (PWM ground) before replacing the solenoid.
Q: Are terminals included?
A: Yes, terminals are included with all variants.
