Deutsch DTM 6-Pin Waterproof Connector – DTM04-6P Male & DTM06-6S Female, 16–22AWG
Deutsch DTM Series 6-Pin Waterproof Connector – DTM04-6P Male & DTM06-6S Female
The Deutsch DTM series is the compact, high-density variant of the industry-standard DT connector family. Where DT connectors use size 16 contacts (13A, 16–20AWG), DTM connectors use the smaller size 20 contacts (7.5A, 20–24AWG) — enabling more circuits in a smaller footprint. The DTM 6-pin configuration is widely used in automotive ECU harnesses, sensor clusters, transmission control modules, and motorsport applications where space and weight are critical constraints.

DTM vs DT vs DTP — Choosing the Right Deutsch Series
All three series share the same locking mechanism and assembly philosophy, but differ in contact size and current capacity:
- DTM (this product): Size 20 contacts, 7.5A, 20–24AWG. Compact housing. Ideal for signal wiring, sensor outputs, ECU harnesses, and CAN bus connections where wire gauge is small and space is limited.
- DT Series: Size 16 contacts, 13A, 16–20AWG. The most common series. General-purpose automotive, agricultural, and industrial wiring.
- DTP Series: Size 12 contacts, 25A, 12–16AWG. High-current power feeds, battery cables, motor drive circuits.
Critical note: DT and DTM housings are physically similar but contacts are NOT interchangeable. Size 16 contacts will not lock correctly in DTM housings and vice versa. Always verify the series before ordering replacement contacts.
What Questions Does This Product Answer?
- "What is the difference between DTM04 and DT04?" — DTM04 uses size 20 contacts (7.5A, 20–24AWG). DT04 uses size 16 contacts (13A, 16–20AWG). The housings look similar but are not interchangeable.
- "What crimp tool do I need for Deutsch size 20 contacts?" — Deutsch recommends the W-HT-20 hand crimp tool or equivalent ratchet tool with size 20 die. Do not use the HDT-48-00 (size 16 tool) on size 20 contacts.
- "Can I use DTM connectors for CAN bus wiring?" — Yes. The 6-pin DTM is commonly used for CAN bus + power + ground circuits in motorsport ECU harnesses. Twisted pair CAN wires should be routed through adjacent pins to minimize impedance mismatch.
- "How do I remove a terminal from a DTM connector?" — Use a Deutsch removal tool (size 20: 0411-204-1605 or equivalent). Insert the tool around the terminal from the wire side to depress the locking lance, then pull the wire to extract the terminal.
Typical Applications
- Automotive ECU harnesses: Engine management system connectors, transmission control module (TCM) pigtails, ABS/ESC module connections
- Motorsport: Standalone ECU wiring (Haltech, MoTeC, AEM, Link ECU), data logger connections, sensor clusters
- Agricultural equipment: Precision farming sensor harnesses, GPS receiver connections, implement control modules
- Marine electronics: Chartplotter connections, VHF radio harnesses, depth sounder wiring
- Industrial automation: Compact sensor wiring, valve solenoid connections, proximity switch harnesses
Common Assembly Mistakes
- Using DT size 16 contacts in DTM housing: Contacts will not lock. The terminal will back out under vibration causing intermittent faults.
- Over-stripping wire insulation: Strip to exactly the barrel depth of the size 20 contact (approximately 3mm). Excess bare conductor can cause shorts in adjacent pins.
- Forgetting the wedge lock: The W6S wedge lock must be inserted after all terminals are seated. Without it, terminals can back out under vibration.
- Incorrect crimp tool die: Size 20 contacts require a size 20 die. Using a size 16 die crushes the contact barrel and causes high resistance or open circuit.
