Why ECT Sensor Connectors Fail

The coolant temperature sensor is mounted directly on the engine block or cylinder head, in constant contact with engine heat and coolant. The 2-pin connector is exposed to coolant spray from hose connections and thermal cycling from cold start to operating temperature. On Toyota and Honda platforms, a corroded ECT connector causes the ECU to use a default (cold) temperature value, resulting in rich fuelling, poor fuel economy, and the cooling fan running continuously — all without a visible coolant leak.
