The coolant temperature sensor is mounted directly on the engine block or cylinder head, in constant contact with engine heat and coolant. The 2-pin connector is exposed to coolant spray from hose connections and thermal cycling from cold start to operating temperature. On Toyota and Honda platforms, a corroded ECT connector causes the ECU to use a default (cold) temperature value, resulting in rich fuelling, poor fuel economy, and the cooling fan running continuously — all without a visible coolant leak.
Q: My engine cooling fan runs all the time and fuel economy is poor — is it the ECT connector?
A: Yes. A corroded ECT connector causes the ECU to read maximum resistance (open circuit), which it interprets as a very cold engine. The ECU runs rich and keeps the cooling fan on as a precaution. Inspect the 2-pin connector before replacing the ECT sensor.
